Raul Cañibano, an extinguished Cuban photographer, was born in Havana in 1961. He exhibited individually and collectively around the world, and was published in numerous magazines and books, including "Cuba: 100 Years of Cuban Photography".
His work offers glimpses of every day life. "Tierra Guajira" (Country Land), a project concentrating on the life of rural workers, won him Ercilla Grand Prix in the 1999 Cuban National Photography Exhibit. You'll find a few of those images in our selection, as well as photos from Havana, which bring together parts of a scene that seemingly don't belong together, and surprise the viewer with their creativity.
I am 29 years of age and consider photography and traveling to be my main passions in life. Photography has come to be a way of recording my perspective of the world around me as seen through the lens of a camera. With this in mind, I hope to continue to progress as a photographer and pursue documentary work on an international level as well as any other avenues my camera may take me down.
"Photography is not about the thing photographed. It is about how that thing looks photographed"
Garry Winogrand
Everyday life is very complex, a tangle of acts and simultaneous situations we come across 24 hours a day,
But what happens with irrelevant situations? They are part of who we are, but we don’t pay much attention to them, and I promised myself to take photographs of things no one cares about. This is a way of discovering myself.
These images are like pages in my book of life, a tribute to the everyday. I try to find beauty in places and things we forget exist
We all rely on public transport, and meet complete strangers in a confined space for a few minutes every day.
And as we travel, we examine other passengers, their appearance, gestures, fashion sense.... we think we can recognise a dependable person, a suspicious looking person, an attractive person, and even take the liberty to live their life for a few moments while they're doing exactly the same to us. This is the adventure of the public transport.
